It’s not easy to describe this film to non-Germans, unfamiliar with either Max von der Grün’s children’s novel or those that are unfamiliar with Germany’s post-ww2 social issues. However, if you born after 1970 in (then) West-Germany, it is likely that you have read the book in school or saw the following film on TV.

This movie was selected in 3 film festivals: Berlin (Germany) 2008, Pusan (South Korea) 2007 and India 2007. I believe it was the first movie that directed Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette which is only 28 years-old. It was from my point of view very well directed and I am looking forward to watch her future work. The main actor of this movie, Maxime Desjardins-Tremblay was also in his premiere, having never acted before. In short, he was OUTSTANDING. He interprets 12-year-old Jessy who has a tough childhood in Hochelaga (an underprivileged area of Montreal) growing up into a broken home. Basically, Jessy uses wrestling to escape from his chaotic family life. Although, the story isn’t about wrestling but about the courage and determination of its 12-year-old character.

Storyline:
Three teenage brothers, gang-member Bobby, troubled mama’s boy Alan and self-assured prankster Lex, reside in a downtrodden section of Glasgow, Scotland, circa 1968. But while Bobby and Alan are beginning to experience the power of raging hormones, the story focuses on Lex, who begins a downward spiral after he accidentally shoots the leader of Bobby’s gang. Lex’s cockiness and immaturity unfortunately prevent him from understanding the effect his subsequent crimes will have on both himself, and on those around him.
