Transhood 2020
1h 36min | Documentary | 13 November 2020 (Spain)
Storyline:
Filmed over five years in Kansas City, this documentary follows four kids – beginning at ages 4, 7, 12, and 15 – as they redefine “coming of age.” These kids and their families reveal intimate realities of how gender is re-shaping the family next door in a never-before-told chronicling of growing up transgender in the heartland. The film is a nuanced examination of how families tussle, transform, and sometimes find unexpected purpose in their identities as transgender families. Lighthearted and deeply moving, this story teaches us something new about being human.
User review:
I had the pleasure of seeing this documentary before the official release date (later this year). It is incredibly well done—excellent pace, top notch editing, and most important, it invites you into the lives of four families who are navigating life with a transgender child. All of the kids and their parents are authentic—so open and honest. Parents of trans kids, their friends and family members, educators, pediatricians, and so many others will learn so much from these families, and hopefully will learn the critical importance of affirming and supporting your child’s gender journey even when it’s hard and scary. This is a must-watch documentary!
