Storyline:

13-year-old Gritta lives in an old, weathered castle with her father, an impoverished high count. While he works as a passionate inventor on a throne-saving machine for the king, free spirit Gritta enjoys her childhood to the full. But this comes to an end when her father decides to marry the noble Countess Nesselkrautia. She arranges for Gritta to be sent to a convent school. Outraged by the coercion there and the fraudulent machinations of the abbess with the greedy governor Pekavus, Gritta flees into the forest with her friends. There they meet the young prince and become friends with him. Gritta wants to warn the king about Pekavus’ plans, but he is already on her trail.

In a future medieval world, after the collapse of our civilization, man has repeated all the same mistakes again, and installed a new system of law based on false science and superstitious beliefs. Once caught, they are permanently banished from the village, and made to live a life of solitude and poverty. Most prone to this deviance are children – known by elders as ‘vessels for evil’ – since their natural curiosity makes them prey to temptation. Yet these rejected children, left to their own devices, free and as wild as the wind, are discovering the true power of this plant and its teachings. Its sap contain what most adult fear: a vision of the truth. They have learned so much that some villagers even accuse these children of witchcraft.

User review:

I first saw this film in 1975 when I borrowed it from the public library. It’s about a little boy who wakes up to find himself alone in the world. He walks into a bank, a candy store, a toy store, drives a cable car (and crashes it into a parked cable car) and a fire engine. The climax of the story is him flying an airplane up to the moon. I won’t spoil it by giving away how it ends. (Since it is very difficult to find a copy to watch, there is still the hope one might be able to.)It is just an absolutely delightful film, a true classic in its own right. I don’t know who owns it or who has the rights to it, but I believe if they were to make this film available to the public on DVD, it would achieve cult status.
