Storyline:

Memoir of the lives of a family growing up on a post World War I British estate headed up by a strong disciplinarian, her daughter, her inventor husband, their ten year old son, and his older sister. Through the household comes a number of suitors hoping to impress the young woman, including an aviator. When the elder woman’s son shows up at the estate with his French fiancé, everything gets thrown into turmoil. The young boy takes a sudden interest in her sexual allure and his father is disturbed by his own non-Victorian feelings.

Storyline:

A lonely hairdresser watches the title sequence of “That Cold Day in the Park” then visits a local park to invite a down-and-out skinhead to his apartment. He draws the silent man a bath and talks to him as he soaks. He locks his guest in a bedroom. Next day, the skinhead leaves through the window and visits his sister, who’s making a film called “Sisters of the SLA.” He helps with a screen-test. The hairdresser has dreams and fantasies involving the skinhead, the skinhead returns to visit him, and then the filmmaker pays a call on the two men, exposing her brother as faking his silence and pretending a lack of sexual interest. Fantasies can come true.

A rare example of a movie that shows the veracity of WWII in a rural Slovak context, without any ideological/heroic ballast typical for most war movies. There is a grain of hyperbolism in several scenes, in most cases well applied. It reminds me of the stories people that lived through the war as kids told me. About grenades and small weapons collected by boys, about “Amerikans” – return migrants form the US, about the common soldiers and common people, about the ticking life under the veil of war. This in fact is a Slovak movie, and represents the very strong Slovak new wave. This includes the works of Jakubisko, Havetta, Uher, and the Academy winning movie The Shop on Main Street.

In a large building of flats, Hsiao-Kang and Shiang-chyi’s paths cross; she knew him when he sold watches, now he acts in pornographic films. She scavenges for plastic water bottles. He bathes in the building’s cistern. Fantasy song and dance numbers punctuate the characters’ nearly aimless pursuits: she has lost her keys and he helps her find them; he naps in a park, she watches; he smokes on the floor beneath her kitchen table while she sits. His film-making continues. Can they connect?
