Storyline:

Tomek lives alone with his mother, because his father, Alek, left for the USA with money. Unexpectedly, the man shows up at home with a bunch of presents, but does not explain the reason for his return. Everyone seems happy, but there is something disturbing in the air. As time goes on, Alek is struggling with a strong alcohol addiction, which gradually destroys Tomek’s family and his childhood. The boy has to grow up very quickly and face a reality unwritten by any child.

For me, the film is like an autobiographical story about growing up with an alcoholic father. Of course, this does not make me special in any way, because the generation before us saw such drinking to death quite often. Young Tomek’s father is a hero to the boy, who sends a baby from abroad and even seems to be a good father, but slowly the tone changes and there is anxiety that something will soon go wrong. And it goes. Pictorial Eastern Europe is a glimpse into the stairwells and apartments of our own childhoods, but this rapidly fading tale also reflects a deeper problem with overconsumption of hard liquor. My father and uncles drank themselves to death before I grew up, so I can never say that I somehow got lucky or lost, but little Tomek in this story is definitely a loser. The story with good music lives on thanks to the roles of the parents, where Weronika Książkiewicz, who plays the mother, starts as a caring and warm mother, but ends as unremarkable and indifferent. He’s easy to hate. Maciej Stuhr in the role of the father is able to take the viewer on a journey where we love and hate him, but above all we empathize with him. There are no winners or criminals in this film, only victims who need help.
