Storyline

Judith, an uptight divorcee, is appalled when her daughter Lily quits law school to move into a commune of hippie-misfits who live according to the behavioural principles of the bonobo monkey, a species famous for its ‘make love not war’ philosophy. Anita, the eccentric group leader, claims that she can resolve the conflict between mother & daughter if Judith will spend a day among the commune and submit to its principles. But with mother and daughter both hell-bent on proving each other wrong, Anita’s methods must now be put to the test as never before.

In this 1984 West German film, a 12 year-old street kid in a slum of Berlin struggles to stay afloat through a commitment to his compassionate teacher and ambivalent classmates, aged 11-14, who also bear the harsh marks of impoverishment, which manifest themselves in peer ruthlessness and disrespect of adults. Movie does not, however, end in a tragic manner. Film contains frequent profanity, alcoholism, mild crime and peer violence, brief male nudity. This describes the film in German, without dubbing or subtitles.

Storyline

We’re in an English village shortly before Dunkirk. “Mr. Tom” Oakley still broods over the death of his wife and small son while he was away in the navy during WWI, and grief has made him a surly hermit. Now children evacuated from London are overwhelming volunteers to house them. Practically under protest, Mr. Tom takes in a painfully quiet 10-year-old, who gradually reveals big problems. William nightly wets the bed. He can’t read or write, although he is intelligent and shows artistic talent. He constantly dreads going to hell. Scars cover his back. Mr. Tom soon realizes that his little boarder comes from a horribly abusive home, and determines to provide him a better one. All goes well until William’s mother persuades him to return to London for a few days’ visit. When Mr. Tom hears nothing from the boy after two weeks, he can endure the loneliness and worry no longer.
