1h 29min | Comedy | 15 November 2014 (South Africa)

Storyline:

As Spud Milton continues his awkward stagger through adolescence, he learns one of life’s most important lessons: When dealing with women and cretins, nothing is ever quite as it seems. “I’m practically a man in most areas,” writes Spud confidently on his sixteenth birthday. The year is 1992 and, in South Africa, radical change is in the air. The country may be on the bumpy road to an uncertain future, but Spud Milton is hoping for a smooth ride as he returns to boarding school as a senior. Instead, he discovers that his vindictive arch enemy is back to taunt him and that a garrulous Malawian has taken residence in his dormitory, along with the regular inmates and misfits he calls friends. Spud’s world has never seemed less certain; he attempts to master Shakespeare, wrestles constantly with his God, and the power of negative thinking, and develops an aversion to fried fish after a shocking discovery about his grandmother, Wombat.

User review:

If you ever doubted that Germans are pretty cool about nudity, here’s the final proof. This made-for-TV feature film tells the struggle of a nudist campsite in Brandenburg against the new owner, a conservative Bavarian businessman. It also tells the struggle of Jakob, the son of the campsite’s spokesman, against his seemingly open and tolerant father. Nearly every actor in this film had to let his clothes fall at one point or another, some of them had to put them on for some scenes. What might be shocking to some viewers, however, turns out to be mostly harmless. There is good acting, OK dialogue and few surprises in the plot – if you don’t count the unexpected use of the word “eggwarmers”. Still, enough for a nice TV-evening you won’t regret.

In Kazakhstan life is hard and childhood, as we know it, is virtually non-existent. Children and adults alike do what they can to get by. Emir Baigazin’s remarkable. virtually plot less film is divided into a number of chapters, each one examining boys struggling with the pain of the everyday and a life, if a life it is, far removed from what we in the West are used to.
