1h 54min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance | 26 September 1986 (USA)

Storyline:

Charlene Michaelson, her two children – teen-aged Amelia ‘Milly’ Michaelson and precocious adolescent Louis Michaelson – and their dog Max move into a new house in a new neighborhood after the passing of Charlene’s husband/the kids’ father, Donald Michaelson. Beyond life without Donald, they are all nervous about starting a new life, which, for Charlene, means getting back into the workforce after thirteen years. Milly quickly settles into the neighborhood if only because she becomes fascinated with their next door neighbor, teen-aged Eric Gibb, who authorities believe is autistic. Orphaned Eric has never spoken a word, and without having been told about the incident, began to think he could fly at the exact moment his parents died in a plane crash. Many believe Eric’s belief is because he felt he could thus save his parents. Eric’s guardian is his dipsomaniac Uncle Hugo Gibb. Milly’s high school teacher, Mrs. Carolyn Sherman, who used to be a special needs teacher, looks after Eric as much as anyone. Mrs. Sherman believes that having Eric in her class with “normal” students is a positive environment for him, unlike the authorities who believe he should be institutionalized. Milly’s official and unofficial tasks become to see what lies deep within Eric’s psyche, and if there really is any validity to what people think Eric believes.

Race d’Ep 1979
1h 35min | Drama, History | 24 October 1979 (France)

Review:

Race d’Ep! caused scandal when it was released in France. The film was censored and classified as a pornographic film under the “X Law.” Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Marguerite Duras, Simone de Beauvoir, Patrice Chéreau, and Cahiers du Cinéma, among others, signed a petition in defense of the film and opposing its persecution and censorship by the government. Michel Foucault wrote a letter to the Ministry of Culture on behalf of Race d’Ep!, stating that “this documentary is based on historical research whose seriousness and interest I had the chance to prove,” going on to observe, “it seems strange for a film about homosexuality to be penalized when it tries to remember the persecutions of which the Nazi regime has been responsible.”

Terry, who lives with his grandmother, prepares for a night out whilst professionals Gavin and Will celebrate a civil partnership though faithless Will flirts with young waiter Alfie, giving him his ring. Terry finds the severely injured waiter but rather than help him steals Will’s ring. The dinner party guests, who also number Theo’s parents, see the ambulance draw up for Alfie but Julian refuses to tell the police what he saw, to Robin’s dismay. Terry himself is also beaten up and treated in hospital by Gavin, who is displeased to find he has Will’s ring though Will claims he had sent it to the jeweller. Theo’s parents leave the dinner party early and although they do not catch him having sex with Tim Theo’s mother Natasha is suspicious and warns Tim off. Consequently Tim refuses to acknowledge any more of the boy’s advances. Alfie dies in hospital as another young boy Danny, a talented violinist, has his instrument smashed by homophobic tormentors.
