Just Kids 2019
1h 43min | Drama | 5 August 2020 (France)
Jack 19, Lisa 17, and Mathis 10, become suddenly orphans. Each of them reacts in his own way to the family catastrophe.
This feeling is as much that of the protagonists as of the spectators, an impotence mixed with torpor. This makes sense as soon as we understand that the subject of the film is the impossibility of moving forward for two characters dispossessed of their bearings. But that becomes problematic when the content and the form are welded to the point that it is the film itself which struggles to move forward and to give perspectives and horizons of expectation to its spectator.
Formally quite successful, in terms of the light and the acting, the film really fishes in its rhythm and in its capacity to provoke an emotional investment of the audience vis-à-vis the characters. Incapable of really suffering, because too disconnected from reality and too cut off from their own sensitivity, the two young boys only manage to move little.
However, the film is rich in many ideas, such as Mathis’s relationship to photography, a non-aesthetic photograph, undefined, but which carries with it something of the immediate, of the capture of the moment. There is also the strange relationship he has with his iguana. As for Jack, one can think of his continuous search for symbols and meaningful elements, like the painting of the poker players or the snakeskin jacket. But these ideas remain at the stage of ideas and are never invested to the point of being transcended and reaching a higher degree of humanity.
This film is therefore struggling to take off despite all its promises. A hit in the water, but which hides a sensitivity in research and near flowering.
