Adolescents in the amphibious situation between child and adult try to cope with their emotions and their environment. Right there they would need limits, a foothold and hope and yet they signalize the opposite. Erwa shows a troop of little gangsters in HEILE WELT who insult adults on the train, threaten their mothers with long knives and aim pistols at police officers. In the middle of Graz. What comes along in the first half of the film, like the Austrian version of VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED or WHO CAN KILL A CHILD, which has a documentary touch and is digitally wobbly? , but then that develops into a completely different story. Because Jolly, Bolz and Elli – the heart of the clique – are of course not just bad children whose generation was bewitched by the evil Internet or even by extraterrestrials. Rather, HEILE WELT depicts the dreary reality of the parents à la RAHOMONdarkly next to the children’s lives, shifts pieces of the narrative thread into and next to each other and shows that horror can only grow where it was sown. Because binge drinking finds its cause in parental life, that above all the materially oriented, emotionally impoverished vegetating of today’s families shows its effect, that’s what Erwa captured wonderfully here. And also that there are alternatives even at the bottom, as the parallel love story between an Eastern European prostitute and a blind man is able to show.
