Storyline:

A troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife runs off with his trans son into the Montana wilderness after his ex-wife’s refusal to let their son live as his authentic self.

User review:

Why are people treating transgenderism as a condition that should be nurtured or even celebrated? The person who has this is not happy no matter if they live as their “authentic self” (whatever that is supposed to mean) or not. Have you ever met a transgendered person who IS happy? Not the celebs but a REAL person who is burdened with this state of mind? They are as miserable as this movie.

I know it’s not your review but why on earth did you have to pick that one… It’s clearly not written by someone who actually saw the film and having no review would have been much better. o_O

I did see the film at Outfest last july. The performances were great, a surprise from both Steve Zahn and Jillian Bell, who are mostly known for broad comedic roles, but here giving understated and authentic performances. The story was unexpected and atypical, with the trans daughter both closer to and accepted by her father, but not the mother. But it is the performance by Sasha Knight as their trans daughter that was a revelation. This was not a child actor playing trans, but a trans-identified child playing their truth. She won an outstanding performance in a US feature award for the performance at Outfest, and Steve Zahn won a best actor award at the Tribeca film festival. This film would have gained more attention if given a traditional theatrical release, but now, people will hopefully discover it.

And PLEASE remove that negative and transphobic review above that someone else wrote. It is not a review, it is a hateful condemnation of trans people and frankly, insuting to the entire lgbtqia community. It is hate speech.

  4. Toby says:

That review is very appropriate, trans is a mental illness and should be treated as such!

Thank you. Somehow bhm decided to use my review from IMDB. Strange to see it pop up here. I truly wish that the gay community would stop using children to further their political or sexual views. But I suppose that’s always been the case, hasn’t it?
