Storyline:

Through a process of grooming, Daan (12) is gradually sexually abused by his football coach, Ries (35). The necessity of keeping this secret isolates Daan. When the truth eventually emerges, Daan is overwhelmed by shame and must confront the uncomfortable, and at times ruthless, reactions from those around him.

A film that grabs you by the throat. De Pupil (The Pupil) confronts without shocking, showing how abuse can take shape in practice: slowly, almost imperceptibly, through small gestures and seemingly innocent steps. Precisely for that reason, it becomes clear why children so often remain silent, why abuse usually occurs within familiar circles, and why it is so difficult for those around them to recognize the signs in time.

Bart de Wilde (Daan) delivers an impressively convincing performance in this extremely demanding role; I felt his confusion and loneliness from beginning to end. Opposite him, Gijs Naber (Ries) offers a deeply unsettling, persuasive portrayal, showing how someone can gradually earn trust without it being immediately apparent.

What stays with me most is that this film does more than tell a story. De Pupil underlines the importance of openness: to recognize the signs and grooming earlier, to strengthen children’s resilience, to help victims speak out sooner, and to teach those around them to respond calmly and supportively.

It unsettles, it grates, it lingers-precisely why it’s essential viewing.
