Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (original title)
R | 2h 35min | Drama | 29 September 1988 (Italy)

Storyline

A famous film director remembers his childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. He returns home to his Sicilian village for the first time after almost 30 years and is reminded of his first love, Elena, who disappeared from his life before he left for Rome.

User review:

Movies can wield a strange power over those who sit in the darkened seats of a theatre. The truly great ones manipulate your perception of reality, suspend your disbelief, and ultimately either alter or affirm your view on life. NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO is just such a movie. It is the near-perfect melding of direction, acting, script, sound track, and cinematography. Phillipe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio give the kind of performances usually associated with much more recognizable actors. The supporting cast looks like they could all be full-blooded Sicilians. The location shots add depth and realism to the entire production. Ennio Morricone’s music is simply the most appropriate and emotive I have ever had the pleasure to hear in a theatre. Tornatore’s script and direction are a joy, a breath of fresh air.

I will not spoil this story by repeating it, nor will I give away the ending, although it matters not a whit. I could disclose fully everything in this movie, and in seeing it, all my words would evaporate. There is nothing like the experience of sitting through it, becoming engulfed by it, and in the end, being changed.

Director: Giuseppe Tornatore
Writers: Giuseppe Tornatore (story), Giuseppe Tornatore (screenplay)
Stars: Philippe Noiret, Enzo Cannavale, Antonella Attili

    Hello

    I’m sending you this email to ask if you could please try and upload the following boyhood movies onto your webste. I wasn’t sure how to contact you, therefore, I’m replying here.

    The movies are:

    * The Colour of Paradise (Iran 1999) … with English subtitles
    * The Kid with a Bike (France 2011) … with English subtitles
    * Children of Heaven (Iran 1997) … with English subtitles
    * The Runner (Iran 1984) … with English subtitles
    * Los Lobos (Mexico 2019) … with English subtitles
    * Bekas (Iraq 2012) …with English subtitles
    * Taming Andrew (USA 2000)
    * Mark, I Love You (USA 1980)
    * My Son (France 2017) … with English subtitles
    * Crossing the Dust (Iraq 2006) … with English subtitles

    By the way, I am searching for Ponette (France 1996) with English subtitles. I know it’s not a boyhood movie, but do you know where I could download it?

    Keep up the great work on this website.

    Thank you very much.

    George

    Hi bhm

    I noticed you have a protonmail.com email account. I’m not sure if it’s best to contact you there or on this website.

    Thanks very much for uploading The Kid with a Bike (France 2011) and The Runner (1984) from my list above. I hope you will be able to find the other movies on my list with English subtitles.

    I recently downloaded The Revolt of Job (Hungary 1983) and was surprised that a Russian male is speaking over the original Hungarian dialogue. This is frustrating, however, I am grateful for the English subtitles available in this movie.

    Your website contains many fantastic boyhood movies especially a lot of great foreign movies with English subtitles unavailable elsewhere.

    Regards

    George

  5. George says:

    Hi Franz-Josef

    Thanks for your reply, however, the annoying feature of this movie is the male Russian speaker who translates the entire Hungarian movie. The movie is in Hungarian, but the male Russian speaks over the original Hungarian as it seems it has been translated for Russian viewers. Thankfully, there are English subtitles. Both audio tracks (Hungarian and English) include the Russian speaker. Is there a copy of this movie without the Russian speaker?

    George

    • Franz-Josef Haglauer says:

      Once again: the russians often chose the option of ‘speaking over’ – but in this case they have chosen to add an extra audio track for that!
      If you use VLC Video player (free and the best I know), you can click on ‘audio’ and select the option ‘Hungarian’ – and the Russian speaking over has gone!!
      I am quite sure that such option must exist in other players too!

    Franz-Josef

    You’re a lifesaver!!!!!

    I followed your instructions and changed the audio selection to make the Russian speaker disappear. I’ll remember to check the audio and video options in VLC Player. I also use Media Player Classic (MPC – Home Cinema) as I find it’s another great player option. Thank you so much.

    By the way, maybe you can help me with this …

    I recently downloaded “Where is the Friend’s House?” (Khane-ye doust kodjast?) … Iran (1987) from another website without any on screen English subtitles. I tried downloading a few English subtitles (.srt) to add to the movie using VLC player, however nothing worked as they all downloaded as (.rar) files. All I want is to be able to watch this Iranian movie with English subtitles appearing at the bottom of the screen. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  7. Franz-Josef Haglauer says:

    You can also try it here:

    https://www.opensubtitles.org/de/subtitles/3589740/khane-ye-doust-kodjast-en

    I t downloads a zip-file (also a packed archive!) You must unpack it WinZip (or try with 7zip – also free and an universal un-packer – also for rar-files)
    After unpacking you have a srt-file which can be added on VLC…

  8. George says:

    I found the English subtitles to the Iranian 1987 movie “Where is The Friend’s House?” on another website. They work perfecfty throughout the movie. I’ve educated myself about SRT files and how to search for and unpack English subtitles for foreign movies. There are many websites which offer English subtitles and I now feel confident adding an English subtitle SRT file to any foreign movie.
