1h 18m | Crime, Drama | 12 September 1979 (UK)

Storyline:

This is the hard and shocking story of life in a British borstal for young offenders. The brutal regime made no attempt to reform or improve the inmates and actively encouraged a power struggle between the ‘tough’ new inmate and the ‘old hands’.

Trivia:

This is the original version made for the BBC but banned by them and never screened until 15 years later. The BBC said that they banned it because “There was too much incident packed into too short a time and that they doubted the veracity.” So they thought it was pure fiction. But they also said that it “looked too much like a documentary.”

User review:

Scum is a fabulously gritty borstal drama revolving around troublemaker Carlin (Winstone) and his campaign to do his time quietly. The menacing staff and inmates of the Borstal (young offenders prison) are frighteningly realistic and the whole film has the feel of a fly-on-the-wall documentary. Sporadic violence comes with no warning and the rape scene in the greenhouse is one of the most harrowing I have seen on film (may be cut in some versions). Full marks to Alan Clarke and Ray Minton for this beauty.

Sorry, I am a little confused. Isn’t the 1977 version the original tv version and the 1979 version the remade theatrical movie version? If so is this the 1977 tv version or the 1979 movie version?

      • John Doe says:

Well, correct this is the TV version I can confirm that the TV version was made in 1977, not 1979. It was then shelved by the BBC until 1991.

Whoever made the Ibdm page obviously made an error and mixed the date of the play from 1977 up with the theatrical release version with was actually published in 1979 with largely the same main cast.

This is the link to the theatrical release which came out in 1979. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079871/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Additionally, if you search SCUM 1977 there are separate reviews and also a wiki entry that has the correct year.

I hope you don’t take offence to my correction. I really enjoy your work and would hate for someone to be misled. It can be quite confusing with two almost clone films with almost the complete same cast being released only 2 years apart.
