Storyline:

A venomous blood feud divides the powerful clans of the Montagues and the Capulets in the medieval city of Verona, unfolding William Shakespeare’s eternal story of teenage love. And as youth’s insolence arms charming young Romeo Montague with dauntless courage to come uninvited to the Capulets’ scintillating masked ball, a brief but thrilling encounter with delicate dark-haired Juliet Capulet paves the way for ardent passions and cruel romantic tragedy. Once, the star-crossed lovers exchanged vows of everlasting devotion despite their perilous plight. But now, before the grim machinations of fate, man stands powerless. Are Romeo and Juliet destined to be together?

User review:

This was the first time we actually saw the teenage love Shakespeare intended. Years and years before Leonardo Di Caprio and Clare Danes, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Houssey gave life to the tragic story told in this ancestral tale, revamping it without betraying it, making it accessible to a 60s audience without updating it. Leonard and Olivia were so beautiful that Shakespeare became trendy again and I don’t mean any disrespect by it, I’m simply stating a fact. The real, stunning, dusty locations, the costumes, the faces, the music made the whole thing a totally new Shakespearen experience. Remember than the biggest screen adaptation of this play had been with the forty something Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer in those roles. Here everything reeked of youth underlining the tragedy in the most cinematic way. Another important point is to confirm that in 2007 the film still feels young and fresh. Recommended.

classic, thanks. I worked on a TV show with Olivia Hussy. It’s hot to meet someone you used to jerk off to!

‘Romeo and Juliet’ Stars Sue Paramount for Child Abuse Over Nude Scene in 1968 Film

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were just teenagers when they electrified audiences in the 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The film was a hit and was nominated for four Academy Awards, but it also stirred controversy over a bedroom scene which included images of Whiting’s buttocks and Hussey’s bare breasts.

Now in their 70s, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit in Santa Monica Superior Court on Friday, accusing Paramount of sexually exploiting them and distributing nude images of adolescent children.

That’s interesting. Somewhat disingenuous, nearly 55 YEARS LATER! Sounds like a dubious cash grab. Good luck proving the impact of ‘exploitation’ now!

That said, there are many instances of underage nudity in European films of the era (this site is a living temple of that!)

The intent of the film was never to ‘exploit underage nudity’ it was to use actors the same age as the characters in the play – it added depth to the tragedy of the story. Anyone hoping to get a thrill from underage skin will be VERY disappointed by the fleeting glimpses found here. I still don’t feel guilty for wanking over them both WHEN I WAS YOUNGER THAN THEM.

      🙂

“The complaint alleges the pair have suffered “mental anguish and emotional distress” in the years since and have lost out on job opportunities. Damages are being sought “believed to be in excess of $500m”.”

      WTF!?

    @Joe

It’s bad enough that everyone is being conditioned to reinterpret their past through the modern social contagion of “trauma” and “abuse”, but positively disgusting when celebrities try to grift money through the legal system while claiming they were “exploited” decades earlier!

Very cynical move by Whiting and Hussey. Hopefully the court will see through them, and they’ll have to find some other way to leave behind inheritance for their grandkids. They have diminished themselves with this publicity stunt.

    • rixx says:

Well said. FAR too late to cry foul! I can’t think of what they hope to achieve other than to cast a negative shadow on a beautiful film. Madness!

      • Kuja says:

You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

I just watched this version of Romeo and Juliet. The brief skin shots were tame, as you claimed. Although it must be said that Whiting had a terrific bubble butt, and Hussey an ample bosom. But in her case, it was “blink and you’ll miss them!”

All this lawsuit does is make it even less likely for underage nudity to be shown again in Hollywood films, no matter the context. Until the hysteria over “abuse” and “pedophilia” goes away, pushed by the right and the left (who hilariously accuse each other of being groomers).
