The everyday life of a boy coming of age, living with his prostitute mother, saving money, dreaming of a bicycle.
The everyday life of mother and son gradually come together from individual actions, like interlocking links in a chain, or better: like two independent, but well-coordinated rhythms that are set by the relentlessly ticking clock. This co-operation with one another is carried by a touching intimacy, which paradoxically arises from carefully granted distances. Seldom or never are you physically affectionate to one another, caressing, hugging or kissing. But if the shattered mother, after the nightly make-up removal ritual, wraps up a sandwich and puts out a few coins, when the tiptoeing son packs these things up the next morning before carefully closing the door so as not to wake his mother, then it is all these gestures formed on the other, marked by simultaneous affection and consideration, taken for granted and made for each other as always new presented gifts. A complete interpersonal ethic seems to be spelled out here in miniature.
