User review:
This film has rare qualities. It is pensive, intelligent and looks for truths, not flash. It has depth rarely seen in english films. Mid-film though, I was wondering if it is going somewhere. Then I saw, it is not going it’s coming toward us. The story of a boy survivor arriving to normalcy, finally, with what he has, his loving ghosts.

OMG, powerful film.
The grace of the godfather to his adopted boy is so beautiful, but of course the boy is haunted. He writes to free himself, but it causes his first love to fail, “Those who live with ghosts must live in solitude.” As he wrestles to come to terms with the unknown fate of his sister, he helps a neighbor boy come to terms with his parents.
The holocaust is the source of the tragedy, but doesn’t overwhelm the story, which takes place in Greece, as he hides in the house of his godfather, and then in Canada when both emigrate after the war.
Heavy, but emotionally satisfying. Have tissues at the ready.
