Plot:
The main figure is the beginning of nine-year-old Esau Matt, who leads the story as a narrator. In the summer of 1919 the Esaus family moved from Grausteen to Bossdom, where the parents bought a bakery shop. This was done with great financial support from the grandfather, who also lives in the house with his wife. Neither father Heinrich nor mother Lenchen, however, have commercial skill and therefore must always borrow money from the grandfather without being able to repay it.
In the third part Esau returns from the war. His brother Tinko lives with his wife Elvira also in the parents’ house. Elvira is an organization stall, but also a bitch who wants to seduce Esau without success. The grandfather, greatly esteemed by Esau, has become demented and does not recognize Esau again. The wife of his brother Heinjak was raped by Soviet soldiers and is therefore pregnant. Esau begins a relationship with the commune. But when it turns out that Nona, with whom he had a relationship during the war, got a child from him, he takes responsibility. He does not know for a long time how to deal with the new situation as a husband and father. After all, he can occasionally go to the letter, but only after intercourse by his old village teacher Rumposch and when he enters the SED, he can transform his talent into a profession, as an editor of a newspaper.
