In this modern Mexican crime drama, two handsome young private detectives are hired to investigate some possible criminal goings-on at a large estate owned by a wealthy widow by the name of Dona Josefina. There’s one catch, however; Dona Josefina is very “open minded”, and so her guests are artistic, decadent, and homosexual. In order to get an invitation, our two investigators must pretend to be gay! This of course is the most difficult thing they could ever do, as it is the polar opposite of everything these macho men are about. In spite of this seemingly impossible obstacle, they agree to go undercover as a gay couple and are welcomed by Dona Josefina with open arms.
A young boy tries to cope with rural life circa 1950s and his fantasies become a way to interpret events. After his father tells him stories of vampires, he becomes convinced that the widow up the road is a vampire, and tries to find ways of discouraging his brother from seeing her. He must deal with an abusive mother, a father with a charge of molestation, a band of youths creating havoc, and an unforgiving environment in general.

Metaphor, allegory. There’s a drought in Taiwan. Watermelon are abundant and become juice, food, something to share with a guest, and an aphrodisiac. In a large building of flats, Hsiao-Kang and Shiang-chyi’s paths cross; she knew him when he sold watches, now he acts in pornographic films. She scavenges for plastic water bottles. He bathes in the building’s cistern. Fantasy song and dance numbers punctuate the characters’ nearly aimless pursuits: she has lost her keys and he helps her find them; he naps in a park, she watches; he smokes on the floor beneath her kitchen table while she sits. His film-making continues. Can they connect?
